This is a fun project for collage, organic & geometric shapes, positive & negative space and symmetry. It is a Japanese technique called Notan (a fun addition to this would be adding Zentangle to the negative space).
The children start out with a square piece of paper where they draw at least one shape coming off each side. Then they cut out that shape and flip it over so that it is coming out of the square paper. This is done to every shape drawn on every side and creates beautiful compositions.
The simpler abstract works were done by five and six year olds in Kindergarten. When I taught second grade summer school, the eight and nine year olds worked on using symmetry to help them create images within their Notan Collages.
